What's Wrong with Him?
Benjamin Barker has Dissociative Identity Disorder, which is also known as Multiple
Personality Disorder or Split Personality Disorder. Along with DID/MPD/SPD, Benjamin
also has extreme paranoia issues and schizophrenic episodes. Many of his schizophrenic
episodes cause him to believe that his beloved straight-edge razors are within his
hands or nearby. When the episode ends, a new wave of panic and paranoia hits, often
resulting in him either accusing someone of stealing the razors and/or his
alternate personality emerging, who calls himself Sweeney Todd.
Despite the fact that straight-edge razors are banned from public barbershops,
Barker is fond of them and often wishes to use them instead of a normal pair of
clippers/razor. When one customer nearly got the shave that would end his life,
police arrested Benjamin, tried him with attempted murder, found him guilty
and sent him to jail. Things got progressively worse from there. Other inmates
steered away from him and soon even guards disliked being around the ex-barber.
Reports came of the man sitting in his cell, by himself, murmuring to an unseen
object that he cradled in his hands. Usually, after ten minutes of this, he would
begin crying and screaming at others or demanding to know why a certain person
took/hide his friends. Once this began to reoccur, guards asked several other
inmates where they hide Benjamin's things. Everyone answered the same: We don't
know what you're talking about. And soon, he even began accusing guards of
stealing. It became daily routine and discarded by others as a pathetic
attempt to get them in trouble. Another strange symptom of his instability
appeared after one nasty bout of accusation and wailing over lost friends. His
expression suddenly became sullen and he turned to one inmate, who had been
ignoring him, and stared at him for a full ten minutes before growling and
pacing about the cell, muttering and cursing. Concerned that he would become a
threat to others, even though he had never before hurt anyone, the prison had
him evaluated and found him to be suffering from DID, bouts of schizophrenia
and paranoia. A second appeal at insanity later by Barker's lawyer landed the
ex-barber in an asylum. A considerably better place to be. He currently resides
in the South Wing, in room 107 at Rainy Day Psychiatric Hospital, in Buffalo,
New York.
Doctors suspect that Benjamin developed his second personality, Sweeney Todd,
because he couldn't defend himself. First, though, he developed paranoia.
Because he knew that he was too nice and weak to actually defend himself,
he began to suspect that everyone, even those he didn't know, were going to
hurt him, take advantage of him or even steal things from him. Because of the
heightened sense of paranoia, his mind naturally had to give him reasons to be
so paranoid. Instead of merely just thinking that people were going to
hurt him, his mind began to create situations that he could see and
hear. Thus, began the second stage, schizophrenia. More than often,
when he saw or heard things, it was either the voice of the slowly developing
personality or he could see his prized possessions (a set of seven, silver
straight-edged razors). However, he didn't begin seeing the razors until after
he was put in prison. The sense of paranoia only escalated now that he had a
voice to confirm his worries and eventually led to his imprisonment. Now behind
bars, he felt more taken advantage of and weak than ever before. He began to
see his razors as well as hear the voice as the schizophrenia and paranoia
worsened. Finally, after seven years of development, Sweeney Todd made his
grand debut.
Due to recent events, it has become apparent that Sweeney Todd has, at least
since Benjamin became a barber, been inside of Barker. The personality split
did not occur until later, but Todd seems to remember everything about learning
how to be a proper barber. Thus insinuating that he was a part of Barker at that
time in his life.

The first Sweeney Todd. He is, surprisingly, completely sane.
Sweeney Todd (Second)
The second Sweeney Todd. He is completely insane and it is not yet clear
what he may suffer from. He was created from the original Sweeney Todd
after he couldn't handle speaking with the Joker.
